Kale in winter

Wile we’ve had a mild winter so far this year (today, it’s 50 degrees and raining, which is what it’s normally like in November here, not January), this is pretty typical for kale in winter in central Ohio.

Kale in winter, a little droopy, but just fine!

We actually have some other kale that [...]

First tomato

We have our first tomato!

Yum!

It’s a Silvery Fir tomato, and I haven’t tasted it yet.  It’s resting on the windowsill for tomorrow’s dinner!

Garden update

One of the things we did this year was move the raised beds into the fenced yard and move the greenhouse outside of the fence and by the cars.

It was a lot of work (most of it on Jeff’s part!), but well worth it.  It’s much easier to water and keep an eye on [...]

Garden update

Life has happened and gotten in the way of posting, but the garden doesn’t pay any attention to that and has been going gangbusters.

Happy, happy tomatoes!

The blackberry bushes are trying to get into the house.

One day's haul: blackberries, raspberries, eggplant, tomatoes, hot pepper.

July 4 veggie garden update

Happy Independence Day!  Take a moment to read and reflect on what this day really means, not just fireworks and BBQs.

Done that?

Great!  Let’s get onto the garden pictures!

It’s July 4 and the garden is in full swing.  I have tons of tomato flowers, but only a few actual tomatoes; most of mine [...]

They’re much milder than red beets, with less of an “earthy” flavor. They’re also just really pretty to look at.  My favorite way to prepare them?  Roasted on the grill (click for recipe).

[...]

Mid-June garden update

I know it’s been all sewing, all the time around here, but that’s not been all that’s been going on.  In addition to watching a good amount of the World Cup, I’ve been gardening.

Pie cherries!

These are tart pie cherries are pretty much the whole crop this year, but considering it’s only the [...]

A picture of weakness

For me, weakness looks like this:

Tomatoes and herbs and snapdragons, oh my!

I knew I wouldn’t we able to resist the siren call of Oakland Nursery, and I knew I’d get a few things, but … I didn’t realize I would be this bad. Herbs, vegetables, some snapdragons, and the raspberries I picked [...]
